What Is Knee Arthroscopy, and Who Needs It?

Knee arthroscopy is a keyhole procedure. A camera and slim instruments enter the joint through small cuts so the surgeon can see and treat selected problems, such as a meniscus tear that is catching or locking the knee. It is not the right first treatment for every painful or arthritic knee. At S&S Clinics in Manikonda, Hyderabad, Dr. Shashivardhan offers arthroscopy when the exam and scans show a target that surgery can actually fix, after explaining recovery and the non-surgical options.
- What it is
- A camera look inside the knee through small cuts
- Often considered for
- A locking meniscus tear or a loose fragment
- Often not first
- General arthritis pain without a mechanical block

What happens during arthroscopy
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons describes knee arthroscopy as a way to diagnose and treat joint problems through small incisions. You are asleep or the leg is numbed. The surgeon fills the knee with fluid, looks at the cartilage and meniscus on a screen, and treats only what was agreed. Most people go home the same day.
The cuts are small. The result depends on what is done inside, not on the size of the scar. Trimming a torn meniscus, repairing a tear that can hold stitches, and removing a loose piece are different operations with different recovery times.

Who it helps
Arthroscopy is most useful when the knee locks, catches, or gives way and the MRI shows a tear or fragment that matches those symptoms. A young athlete with a repairable meniscus tear is a different decision from an older adult whose main problem is worn cartilage across the whole joint.
Pain from established arthritis often does not improve just because a camera has been inside the knee. In that situation Dr. Shashivardhan starts with arthritis care and talks about joint replacement only if walking and sleep stay poor. Arthroscopy is chosen when there is a mechanical problem to solve.
Before the day, and the first weeks after
You will be told which medicines to pause, when to stop eating, and who should take you home. Bring old scans. Evening counselling at S&S Clinics, Monday to Saturday 5:00 PM–9:00 PM and Sunday 10:00 AM–1:00 PM, is for the decision. The procedure itself is scheduled in an operating theatre, not in the consultation room.
- 1
Confirm the target
Symptoms, exam, and MRI should point to the same problem. If they do not, surgery waits.
- 2
Same-day discharge
Most people leave with a bandage, a plan for pain tablets, and instructions for the first walks.
- 3
Move early
Ankle pumps and the prescribed bends start early. A locked knee from swelling is a reason to call, not to force the bend.
- 4
Physiotherapy
Return to sport or squatting follows the repair, not a fixed calendar copied from someone else’s knee.
Risks to ask about
Ask about stiffness, a clot in the leg, infection, and the chance that the knee still aches if arthritis was already there. Numbness around a small cut is common and usually fades. Fever, a calf that swells, or a wound that opens should be reported the same day rather than saved for the next routine review. Dr. Shashivardhan goes through these points before you decide.
Common questions
Is knee arthroscopy major surgery?
It uses small cuts and is often a day procedure, but it is still an operation inside the joint. Recovery depends on whether the meniscus is trimmed or repaired.
Will arthroscopy cure arthritis?
No. Washing or trimming an arthritic knee does not restore lost cartilage. Arthritis pain is treated with physiotherapy, medicines, and sometimes joint replacement.
How soon can I walk?
Many people walk with support the same day. If the meniscus was repaired, the surgeon may limit bending or full weight for several weeks. Follow that instruction, not a general article.
Do I need an MRI first?
Usually yes, when arthroscopy is being considered, so the surgeon knows what can be treated. The MRI does not replace the exam.
Can a locked knee wait?
A knee that is stuck and will not straighten should be seen promptly. Call +91 93900 57871 during clinic hours, or use emergency care if it follows a major injury.
How long is the bandage on?
The dressing plan is given on the day. Keep it dry until you are told it can be changed. Soaking the cuts in the first days raises infection risk.
When can I return to sport?
Desk work may be possible within days. Running and pivoting wait until strength and the repair, if there was one, allow it. Dr. Shashivardhan clears this at follow-up in Manikonda.
